Subway Fares Increase, While Service Remains Crappy

While this is not new news to NYC commuters, subway fares increased in March and I choose today to rant about it. While single rides remain at $2, those of us who are forced to use mass transit daily and purchase monthly tickets to "save money" now have to pay $5 more/month. Now, this may not seem like a lot of money to some, but that's not really the point. The point is, WHAT ARE WE GETTING FOR THIS FARE INCREASE? Faster service? Definitely not. Cleaner subway cars? I don't think the cars have been cleaned in decades. Less congestion? Hell no! In fact, according to Glick Report (http://glickreport.blogs.foxbusiness.com/2008/05/16/ditch-the-car-take-the-train/), NYC subway use is up 6.8% for January and February. So where is our money going??? I wouldn't mind paying more if I saw improvements, but I don't think there have been any efforts to improve the subway system since before I was born! (were subways around then? I'm not THAT old!) Have you seen the subways in DC? They are carpeted. CARPETED! Am I the only one outraged and disappointed by the MTA?

Song of the moment: Still "No Air" by Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks because I want to spite all the haters out there :)

just because i'm a hater i'll comment and tell you that the fare increases are probably necessary because of aging machinery and mandatory salary and benefits increases. but if you're unhappy with the subway why don't you start a new blog called thoughts in an expensive taxi or in an even more expensive parking lot....pick a new song loser.

I share those frustrations - the city is trapped because it can't afford to shut down entire lines to redo them without causing nightmares - sadly I think it will get worse...song still lame

Good try, Sam, but if the money is to fix aging machines, then why don't I see new, or more, machines in the subway stations? And don't even get me started on salary because I'm still bitter over the last MTA strike.

And, I may just keep "No Air" around because of your dislike of the song. Tell me you love it and maybe I'll pick a new one.

Thanks, Patrick D. It is definitely something I will consider, once I have recovered from my Obama overload. In the meantime, do you know what's a great song by U2? "One," but the version he sings with Mary J.

you should listen to Johnny Cash's version of One...

you two are so cool having a conversation on this awesome blog. and yes it is a good try, a new car is probably crazy expensive. they're probably just trying to fix the old ones so they can keep running. but i don't know, i just like being a hater. and no air still sucks and will always suck. now "damaged" that's a good song. it's a lil old by now but you can still make it big again.

The DC Metro reminds me of Disneyland. Or how the Imperial Army moves around the Death Star. It's f'ing awesome. It's so easy to use, I think there's got to be some sort of catch. Like, every 1,000th rider on the metro is forced into a closet with Newt Gingrich or something

The NYC Subway however, is like your favorite dive bar. Without the grime, it just wouldn't be the same. Likewise, the DC Subway is like a midtown martini bar. Sometimes it's so glammed up that it's obtrusive.
